Promising intervention but reservations from an EMDR client
EMDR may be an excellent form of overcoming trauma, and the research tends to suggest it does, although if you read the literature in a disinterested way, you will find there are many mixed reports on study results. Some find EMDR equal to or better than Cog/Beh Therapy intervention; some find it better; some find it not as effective. As someone who has conducted experimental research AND has undergone EMDR for trauma, I wish to point out several issues that should be addressed, even for true believers.First, EMDR is a perfect intervention for a technological age: after all, don't all our life's problems supposedly have a technological solution. Our culture says so, but of course, history tells us otherwise.Spiritual meaning, social integration, a personal credo, culture and religion still appear to be the ingredients that hold us together..or as Paul Tillich says, "Our ground of being."Technology may be helpful but it is ultimately ancillary.Of course, those who suffer from trauma may require immediate relief, and if EMDR can reduce suffering efficiently and quickly, that's fine.I had about 10 EMDR sessions and they helped me immensely.HOWEVER, that being said, one must look a bit further.First, one must consider the individual client him/herself.EMDR helps us return to a traumatic event, see it more objectively, and hopefully allows us to use our reasoning faculties which may not have been in play during such events owing to stress, shock, immaturity, ignorance, and so forth.However, I believe we all have varied levels of experiencing or "reliving" memory. Some can visualize quite easily and can "see" the experience as vividly, even more vividly than the true life one. In keeping with Gardner's idea of "multiple intelligences," we should consider that different individuals have different "intelligences" in reconstructing or reliving events. Furthermore, we should consider that individuals have varying degrees in their ability to make associations.While a trauma may be a single event or several similar events, in all likelihood they have developed as narrative themes that compose the self-concept the client has.The better a client can connect the trauma to such themes, the more holistic the effect. A good EMDR clinician can encourage this reconstruction, but one should be aware that we have different cognitive styles.

Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

An amazing reference guide.
This book lays out everything you need to know in a concise, easy to follow format.If only it wasnt so friggin gigantic. So whether you need to run to the office to brush up on a procedure you havent attempted since your second year of residency or you need something heavy to bash the hell out of a Ganglion cyst (please dont actually do that), this is a great tool.

Great Book for anyone interested in emergency medicine
I am an EMT working toward a degree in nursing or PA. I saw this book being used in the ER at UVA Medical Center and had to have it. It has been a great learning tool for me. I would recomend anyone practicing emergencymedicine to add this book to your library.

This book has made me wonder just what the hell psychologists have been doing for the last 100 years.Used in a large number of college classrooms around the nation, and along with the hefty $100+ price tag, I was rather expectant as I began reading this colorful text that was to offer an introduction to abnormal psychology.And if I might be blunt, after finished the whole text, I'm left with the conclusion that either psychology is one of the emptiest modern "sciences" practiced today, or this book fails to achieve its introductory purpose.Due to further research and careful observation of my professor, I surmise the case is more of the former.Read more

new edition: think again
I have heard Annie thinks that electronic info sources and book formats like her Brain:DI. book are the way of the future and therefore a retread of this "obsolete" format (actual sentences) unnecessary.Too bad for us.

Will there ever be an update ?
This is an excellent book. It has all the requisites for comprehencing and understanding the central nervous system imaging. The only defect is that it is an old book. Will there be a newer version of it soon ? or ever ? Does anyone know ?

Excellent basic text but...
This remains an excellent textbook on neuroradiology. I think it should still be an essential read for a neuroradiology fellow. It is probably a little too much for a resident to "read through" during his/her neurorad rotations. The pictures are of high quality. But, the text book has one big drawback in that it is becoming more and more outdated. There is no significant mention of Diffusion/perfusion/PET imaging. I found this book to be a valuable read to gain knowlegde of the basics of neuroradiology. It bridges the gap between less detailed books such as the Mosby Handbook Series (also by A. Osborn) and a more complete reference text like Atlas' MRI of the Brain and Spine. This is still an excellent book to have. ... Read more

EXCELLENT NEW EDITION
Forget the hype about Bolognia, this is the best book on clinical dermatology out there today. Written by three of the top clinical dermatologists in the country, there is a unity of writing and approach and and a consistent high quality level that you don't get with texts with hundreds of co-authors (many of whom are in training themselves). There is also a refreshing aspect that this book is written for practicing dermatologists and avoids much of the incomprehensibility of so-called academic dermatology texts. Andrews is much improved over the last edition with color photos and the input from Dirk Elston, one of the most prolific dermatogists in the country. This is the one book EVERY dermatologist should have on his desk.

echocardiography at its finest
As a student echocardiographer learning the pathology of cardiovascular diseases, I have both this edition and one earlier. This is well worth the upgrade in price. It has 1 second loops of most of the many possible pathologies found in echocardiographic studies. Though I have looked at the clips several times, installation was initially a short-lived problem. This new edition is a complete overhaul as described by Feigenbaum. He admits that he is not the sole author but Armstrong and Ryan are the primarys on this edition. This book's attention to clinical detail makes it a must in my book when considering Echo books. Having a resource to give you a moving example of cardio pathology can only enhance one's understanding.

Great echo book but...
When I was a young man, I read the last edition of this book and I fell in love with Cardiology.Every word in the last edition was memorized, just like a love letter.Now I am an old man, and I was delighted to see a new edition of this book finally published.I spent one weekend digesting every word.While I found the book highly delightful to read,I am finding factual errors in the book, to my disappointment.For example, in chapter 6, page 172, figure 6.51, deceleration time of mitral inflow was drawn incorrectly (it should start from the peak of the E wave, not from the beginning of the E).Then in chapter 16, page 513, the book stated that in dobutamine echo, a hypokinetic area that exhibits "sustained improvement" rather than "bipashic response" should be read as non-viable.But in echo literature (Heart. 2001 Dec;86(6):672-8 and Am J Cardiol. 1999 Jul 15;84(2):130-4), "sustained improvement" is considered viable.

Excellent textbook

Concise, Readable, yet Advanced
Although concise, this so-called "baby DeMay" is far from incomplete or immature, and can serve as an excellent cytopathology resource for a pathology resident.(A staff pathologist with occasional responsibilities in signing out cytologic specimens may also find it useful.)But for the cytopathology component of general pathology boards, this book is arguably the only resource one requires, and is certainly a valuable component of a residency library.

The iformative at a glance Cytology book
It was my dream when I read about this book, having an idea about the major Cytopathology book 'The Art & Science of Cytopathology' I thought that the book is informative but I can't imagine whether all Cytology information could be included in such mini text. It was difficult to me to buy this book because it is not available at home country book stores at the same time no master card facilities. I made a request to my colleague in America and I received the book after three days mail. When I went throuh the pages I found information enough and I used it as an excellent review for the paper I introduced in Uk at the IBMS congress on 'Giant Cell Carcinoma of the Lung. It is my pleasure to comment on a book written by an expert scientist Richard DeMay a pioneer of Cytopathology and really it is a great honor for me to tell this story from Sudan, and it is a real baby for the baby 'DeMay R.M of the Father of Cytopathology George Nicolas Papanicolaou.
A Must Have.
I like to call this book "baby DeMay". It's very well organized, great pictures, and a whole lot easier to haul off the shelf than the Big Daddy DeMays. Excellent as a quick reference and/or a study tool. ... Read more

I'd give it zero stars if I could
I understand that the typical Psychology Book is not exactly a riveting novel, but good god, this was way too much.I have never been more annoyed with a text book- I would never voluntarily have read this garbage!She would have had a much shorter book if we weren't forcefed her life story at every possible chance she could insert it in.This woman is very full of herself...very full.There were a lot of typos, a lot of redundent sentences, and a lot of crap we didn't need!I hope for the rest of the psychology students of the world that this author reads these reviews and vows never to write another text book again.If I ever have a class that requires another text book by her, I will drop without hesitation!And change majors the next morning!

HORRABLE
In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it.

Increasing understanding of Aging
Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. The Best Reference for Organic Chemistry
This is by far the best text I have found.Although it is considered a text book, it is more handy as a reference tool. I have seen no other book that contains more information than March's.This book is actually worth the price.

An investment that'll last you for years.
I bought a copy of this text (2nd Ed) after finishing my sophomore year of college, and it proved to be the best single investment I've ever made in chemistry.I used it so often, I had to duct-tape the book together.

Good textbook, but double-check info
This is a good textbook if you have other resources available to double-check the information. The main problem I found with this book is that it tends to contradict itself, which can be quite frustrating for a student who is preparing for a test. For instance, the text will tell you that a certain condition usually presents as a single lesion, but the table right next to it says that same condition usually presents as a multiple lesion. This doesn't happen all the time, but it is more often than I would expect for a textbook.
Great Textbook for Diagnostic Ultrasonography
I have read the previous edition of this book. Compare the fourth edition, several improvements have been made in this edition: Each chapter begins with a list of key terms and definitions. Color illustrations and layout are used. A lot of new ultrasound images are added and the qualities of these images are much better. The text has been retrenched. Important points are put in tables for differentiation. Even there are still a few mistakes in this edition, I believe this is a great book.

good for interns, simple for surgeons, very superficial for specialists
Ok, when compared to the "I can read series for surgery (ACS surgery)" this book obviously has much more valuable data and in depth chapters. But this book is simply lacking the information which is crucial for advanced learners. esp. the breast is simple for even 3.year med students. too many errors very unfortunate for such a book with reputation. many chapters are lacking detailed information, badly organized text, reads like a british book, not very appealing for people who are used to reading american texts only. try reading sample chapters before buying one.

Too vague, boring to read
Unlike voluminous texts like Harrison's, I find this text written in such a fashion that it becomes a chore to read. Given, I am not going into surgery, but any well written textbook should hold someone's interest. I find the book too vague and low yield for medical students and probably too simplistic for surgical residents. Needless to say, I am going to try to sell it before the new edition comes out.

Too many errors
I "converted" from Greenfield, pleased with the new changes to Sabiston which included better quality paper, consistent diagrams and illustrations throughout the book, and concise but relevant discussions within the chapters.This book seemed more practical than Greenfield did.Furthermore, many of the contributors are my attendings and I rely on their brilliance and expertise daily.

This book is rare because it is original. It welcomes you to the real world of critical care as seen by one expert physician. It was probably never intended for quick reference or board prep.
