5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for reference and study
This is now the fourth edition of this textbook that the reviewer has purchased. The first edition was the reviewer's companion during the senior year of medical school and residency training, when the appropriate sections were read whenever encountering patients with one of the discussed diseases. The second edition was the reviewer's most-used texbook during preparation for the anesthesiology oral examination. Most recently, a second copy of this most recent edition was purchased as the required textbook for a resident rotation in preoperative evaluation. This book has a place on the shelf of any anesthesiologist who is preparing for the oral boards or in practice.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This book is very good for the integration of patient care with pathophysiological conditions or co-morbidities. A must have before addressing your patients with higher ASA number assignments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Previous reviews are outdated!
The previous 3 reviews were written before the release of this new edition. Still the best single book to read for the oral Boards. All clinicians should own a copy and refer to it often. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Anesthesiology
It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearlyin not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This would be an optimal choice for most medical students with a special interest in anasthesia as well as for anaesthesia residents. It's extremely well-written, neither too detailed nor too simple. The authors write with authority, which is a good thing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Still a great resource
I just updated my older, well read copy recently. This is still my favorite anesthesia resource, the book I grab when I want to refresh my memory about this or that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
If you are on a anethesia rotation this is a must have. Easy to read and helps you with all aspects of your rotation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction
Unlike some people, I found this book to be very readable, which in my opinion makes it an excellent choice to start off your anesthesia training with.I found that it offers a quick run-through of most topics.Unfortunately, I haven't opened this book since I finished my first year.Instead I go to the more detailed texts.I'm not sure about studying for the boards from it.It doesn't seem to me like it has enough information. But anyways, I think that it's a great introduction and I have to say that it helped me many, many times during my first few months in anesthesia.I would buy this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the written boards
Do yourself a favor when you start to REALLY study for the writtens.Take ALL of your other anesthesia books and stack them in the corner across the room. Then sit down and basically KNOW THIS BOOK FRONT TO BACK (about 4 or 5 different colors of highlighter is about right).Take a bunch of practice exams (the MGH workbook is pretty good) and you'll be ready to knock back a few cold ones the night after you smoke the writtens. Works for the Re-cert also.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great review book, it got me 100% on my first anesthesia test!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great prep for written boards
I thought this Q&A review book was easily the most "bang for the buck" in preparation for the written boards. It does require a solid fundamental knowledge of anesthesiology, but the questions are very representative of written board-type questions, and the answers are comprehensive and largely satisfactory. Textbook references are fairly comprehensive and accurate. I highly recommend this book as a final step in preparation for the written boards!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review book
I read this book 3-4 times. The pedi section is very good. The explanations are where the money is becuase the themes repeat on the exam.If you can grasp the concept and understand the explaination - its very high yeild - at least it was for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for 4th year Medical Students
This book is extremely well written and has all the information you are most likely to be pimped on.When residents have seen me reading it they say this is one of the best books around and that this new edition is extremely well done with the use of color and organization of topics. Most of these same residents will whip out their old copies and ask if they can compare the two to see if its worth them buying the new edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you practice Anesthesia
Great reference! I am a Nurse Anesthetist and I use this book almost daily with my clinical students. The book is direct and to the point. It is logically arranged and well written. I also have the second ed. and this is a vast improvement. I ordered several for my fellow anesthetist. Nice job Dr. Duke!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
As a nurse I have worked in PACU for a couple of years, but it was only after reading through this book, temporarily abandoned on a table in the unit by one of the residents, that I realized of how much about the subject I was quite ignorant.I decided to remedy the deficiency by reading more on the topic.Although we had a number of books on the nursing aspect of anesthesia, I found that most of them bogged me down in things I really didn't need to know to do my job.It was interesting to learn about the demographics of PACU nurses or about the amount of space needed for each patient bed, for instance, but it wasn't really helpful.I decided to purchase the book the resident had been reading, Anesthesia Secrets.I wasn't disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesiology Review (Anesthesiology Review)
excellent book.read it when I was bored one day.wish i'd used it earlier when on the ICU rotations.probably would've become an anesthesiologist if I'd had it in med school.one dreams of writing a chapter in that book someday...
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for all specialties
This is one of those books that can be appreciated by almost every clinician. Dr. Faust has done a fantastic job of applying basic science principals to practice. After being away from the classrooms of medical school for awhile, one tends to become myopic and reliant upon specialty-specific pricipals. This book book helps dust off those cryptic vaults within the cerebrum and can really get the acetylcholine flowing.
5-0 out of 5 stars One for the coffee table
I don't normally put my medical textbooks out for display, but I like to use this one as a conversation piece. Each chapter is well reasoned, concise, and suprisingly entertaining. The chapter entitled "Pharmacology of Hetastarch and Pentastarch" had me weeping. Med students - this book will help you fly through boards. Lay people - this book is a suprisingly good read. You know, I don't know this "Ron Faust," but I'm sure we would be instant friends if we ever met.I'd love to share a bottle of courvasier in front of a warm fire and discuss the finer points of anesthesiology with this man.My wife is sick of me talking about him. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Succinct helpful reviews
This book has short reviews on topical subjects and has been a godsend while studying for exams. Each chapter is about 5-10 pages long and starts with some background information on the incidence and implications of the topic eg preventing perioperative renal dysfunction, perioperative hyperglcemia, optimal treatment for aspiration etc. It will then go on to assess available information on that subject. Each chapter ends with a section on areas of uncertainty followed by the authors recommendations on the topic. Most chapters are about 5-10 pages long and easy to read. Overall the book is also well indexed and well referenced. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must fot the Oral Boards
You've passed the written boards - Congratulations! Now that you're sober again it's time to start thinking about the orals and this puppy is a big part of the solution. It's set up in an oral board question and answer style.Simply read the question -without looking at their answer- and then answer it out loud like you would if the examiner were sitting there in front of you. I know it's weird but it really does help to also practice in front of a mirror to eliminate all of the bizarre facial tics you never knew you had.Now look at the answer. Were you right or even close?Good! Keep going, you'll hone your style to a razor's edge. This technique, along with some good mock oral practice with those attendings who know how to give them, will have you spraying champagne over your friends and family like you've won the Grand Prix of Monaco the night after!

4-0 out of 5 stars an overly comprehensive review
I do agree that this textbook is a very well-done, well written book with a lot of value for anesthesiologists. However, as a tool for oral board study it is actually a bit too comprehensive and inclusive. Take my word for it, during your oral board exam you are not going to be asked about histologic changes in the bronchial mucosa of the asthmatic or the synthetic pathway of catecholamines. The person studying for the oral anesthesiology board doesn't have time to waste learning material that he or she doesn't need to know. I recommend instead Clinical Cases in Anesthesia by Reed. Same format, much more focused on the material that the anesthesiologist must know for the oral exam.

An excellent book. However, it is very heavy and cumbersome to read.Since it has become the encyclopedia of anesthesia, I would prefer if it were available in several smaller books. Also, the print is not as easy to read as in older editions.
