Agree, But Disagree
I agree with Reiss that if we take hormones at all, they should be natural hormones, and unfortunately, so many women suffer from menopausal symptoms that hormonal replacement seems to the the only answer or relief. I suffered from day and night hot flashes, skin conditions, and a lousy mood as I entered menopause.I actually went to a western medical doctor, something I totally disagree with.They wanted to put me on premarin, and/or anything else I would take to fatten their kickbacks.Luckily, I was referred to a holistic health consultant trained originally by Native Americans. She showed me how to get in balance without hormones, and I'm fine.This book, and many like them, should be read with caution.When doctors write books, it's the same to them as writing a prescription.Forget the cures, find the cause.When the cause is eliminated, there's no need for a cure. Read Gangi, then add this as a follow-up.

At Last - Life Changing Truth About Natural HRT for Women
This is the first truly detailed and informative book I've read on Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy (NHRT) that I can really use. Now at age 51, I had started a NHRT regemin at age 49 that was helping, but I did not understand why sometimes it didn't work very well or not at all for some debillitating symptoms. I was also concerned about increasing my risk for cancer. After reading this book, and adjusting my hormone intake, I am no longer suffering from migraines, I no longer fear increasing my risk for cancer, the mind fuzziers are pretty much gone, and I feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally that I have in years - I'm talking since about age 15 here! As women, we must become informed about our hormone balances and imbalances, especially if we suffer from dramatic mood swings in our earlier years, or are approaching, or experiencing menopause. This book will become a permanent part of your 'health library'. Very self empowering!

A quick and worthwhile read!
As a Social Worker working with family caregivers of people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Stroke, I found this book especially interesting. I learned a great deal, especially as related to how Alzheimer's and strokes interact to produce a more acute presentation.I also admired Dr. Snowdon's ability to stay connected with his study's participants as individuals first vs. seeing them only as study subjects. Lastly, it was very interesting to learn more about religious orders, a world which has alwaysseemed shrouded in mystery. This book is all at once a research, sociological and narrative read.I'm looking forward to finding out what else Dr. Snowdon and his team discover from this remarkable longitudinal study!

Aging with Grace is an accessible and easy to read book packed with complex scientific and research data presented in understandable language.The author, David Snowdon, writes with a compassionate style that engages the reader draws them into the story of the Nun Study.This book is more than just a mere presentation of the results of the Nun Study and its impact on Alzheimer's research; it is biography and a truly human story.The lives of the sisters who participated in the study are made known to the reader and the reader becomes attached to them and the great legacy that they are leaving for humanity.Much can be learned on a human and spiritual level from the stories of the sister participants that goes beyond the scientific data and study results.Snowdon does and excellent job of weaving humanity with science resulting in the reader learning and engaging in science without becoming scientific.
Excellent reading for anyone at any age
Dr. Snowdon, who'd been conducting a multi-faceted study of a group of nuns for about 15 years at the time of the writing of this book (2001), presents a heart-warming account of his team's findings directed at the lay person.

Really good for those interested in assisted living needs
I needed information on how to finance, build and market senior housing.The information in this book on elderly and handicapped housing needs is really helpful to me.This is well done, and those of us not part of the industry can understand it.

An essential part of your long-term care management library.
Pearce has done an excellent job of writing a sentinel primer for managing long-term care communities.The details are all there.Of even greater importance, the details are presented within the context of critical principles that distinguish the excellent community from the average or mediocre.As a faculty member responsible for a number of long-term care management courses at two schools of public health, this is one of a very limited number of texts that I assign as "must reads" for my students.

A Detailed and Complete Guide on Senior Living Communities
I truly enjoyed "Senior Living Communities: Operations Management and Marketing for Assisted Living, Congregate, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities".It answered most of the questions that I had on developing a community for senior living. I feel a social calling to provide for the housing and care needs of the elderly. The Senior Care track was adopted as a part of the Masters of Real Estate degree that I am enrolled in. This book was used in one of my classes. What a blessing!As I began to read this book, I realized that most of the "concise details" in developing a community are all in there.I am so amazed to see such valuable information each time I turn the page. The author has addressed the obvious and the important things that often are forgotten. This book is like the bible of developing successful senior living communities. Beyond the front cover...
...lies a pleathora of easily accessible and directly useful information for the AD caregiver. What is not contained on the pages is supplied by weblinks and addresses for helpful groups and associations. The best advice often comes from those who have walked the walk and the author here is no exception. Kudos to the author for her bravery and much gratefulness for the gift to us all from the author and her mother.

A good addition to a collection of Alzheimer's books
Alzheimer's for Dummies does a good job in presenting the information relating to care giving and decision making for families of Alzheimer's patients. Good information
As an adult child of an Alzheimer's patient searching for as much information as I can about Alzheimer's disease, I find most books to have very little of the humor I desperately need to find to help me cope as the disease progresses. As a person who is living through the progressive loss of a loved one to this disease, I don't find this book to be insensitive or belittling, but refreshing and honest.
