Sleep, Sleep, Sleep
No need for letting a baby cry.Lots of need for structered naps.Why not look a little at nutrition and a little at spirituality? The "Dr." comes from a "doctor's" point of view. Native Americans used cradleboards that rocked the child naturally to sleep while suspended from a branch.Sounds archaic.Some new-agers use essential oils and diffuse "Gentle Baby" or "Peace and Calming." I read, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," and learned about the body, mind, and spirit of my children.They all sleep now, and so do I.I wish the doctors that write these books, Weisbuth especially, would do a little research they profess to be good at, and learn a more holistic approach to children's health, and for that matter, ours.

The best source available on the subject
Dr. Weisbluth's book was lent to me by a friend just as my daughter was turning 5 1/2 months old. She had changed from a great sleeper to miserable and I couldn't figure out why. I had said from the beginning that I would never let my child "cry it out" and I resisted when people mentioned this book because I was concerned that I would have to do just that. But, after reading his book cover to cover I learned Dr. Weisbluth's book doesn't focus on letting your child cry. He explains when and why you should put your child down to sleep and addresses the emotions parents feel if their child does cry for any length of time. After reading this book I discovered my daughter was overtired and once I started following the nap guidelines her bedtime went from crying and screaming to quietly laying down ech night. Do not let people scare you with the "crying it out" part - as I said Dr. Weissbluth's book addresses much more and I'm so happy that we decided to try his techniques. If you are having a difficult time with naptime or bedtime I highly recommend this book!

You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.

Should be Mandatory Reading
I feel this book should be on the "mandatory reading" list for all women - especially young women.Our society and most of our mothers have wholly failed at teaching us about this sacred subject! Whether you are trying to get pregnant, trying to prevent pregnancy, or neither of the above, this is a must read.I would add, that there is a lot of information in this book that men should know too.

Read this and got pregnant the first month!
I had no trouble conceiving my first child when I was 35 years old. When we tried for baby #2, however, I was 39 years old and after 6 months of fruitless efforts we were beginning to get frustrated. A friend recommended this book to me. I got the book and began charting my cycle using the methods in the book. BINGO! I got pregnant the very first month I charted. What I learned in the process, was that I was ovulating a full week later than normal, so while my husband and I were diligently trying to conceive in the early part of my cycle, up through the time I thought I would be ovulating, we were stopping our determined efforts a little too early. The month I started charting, we just kept on going (much to my husband's delight: )until the thermometer said we could stop. A couple of weeks later I discovered I was pregnant and now our daughter has a little brother!: )

Fun and Frustrating
"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars.If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you.It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.

He knows more than I thought...
A few weeks ago, my husband turned to me out of the blue and remarked smugly, "I can't believe how some guys don't know anything about pregnancy."
Short? Yes Worth it? Yes Useful? Yes
As a first time expecting father everything has been confusing, even looking for a pregnancy guide that's shorter than The Bible. This was my first book I've read on the subject so I didn't want something overwhelming. This is exactly what this book is good for. It gives relevant information that one can digest in a few hours and come away knowing more than they did. This book is simple, informative, and humourous. I remember quite a few times where I would point a part out and show it to my wife.
Breath of fresh air
My wife and I read this book together while expecting our first child.Our doctor, friends, and family inundated us with medical/psychological/technical books that increase your stress levels as much as your knowledge about pregnancy.This author manages to inform and entertain at the same time.It is a quick read that provided a welcome break from the other content-heavy pregnancy books, although I would recommend reading one or two of those as well. ... Current OB and GYN Dx and Tmt
As a busy 4th yr resident, there is hardly any time to read the major OB/GYN textbooks. This text is a good review of major concepts in OB/GYN. It's a very easy read.

Great book for 3rd year med school
I used this book as a supplement to my 3rd year clerkship in med school.It is not a huge text, so it was great for looking up the details that were not found in Blueprints, especially if you are interested in OB for a career.The book is well organized and is easy to read.Too much to read for board review or shelf exams, but an excellent reference book for OB/GYN.

Also Good for Fathers-To-Be
One of the very few stipulations my wife made after we learned we were going to have a child is that I read this book by the doyenne of natural childbirth in the U.S. While the tone of the book is much too touchy-feely/hippyish for me, I have to admit that it is well worth reading regardless of whether you're planning a natural childbirth or a fully tech'ed out hospital one. That said, it would be very easy to read it as gospel and get swept up in its giddy repudiation of modern medicine, so one should approach it with, if not a skeptical eye, at least with one's critical faculties fully engaged. There is also the potential that readers who are fully committed to a hospital birth may come away from this book feeling scolded, or as if their decision is somehow"wrong".
Ina May is an Inspiration to all women
I read Ina May's book "Spiritual Wifery" and was inspired to get a midwife for the birth of my child (I am now 34 weeks).This book is even better thatn the 1st because it is 1) up to date, 2)has clear recommendations on what to do to have an unmedicated birth and 3) full of science and positive birth stories, she separates fact from fiction.And there's a lot of fiction out there concerning birth in the USA!Every woman should read this book, especially pregnant women.

Another WHO book
World Health Organization: Tumours of the Breast and Female Genital Organs (edited by Fattaneh A. Tavassoli and Peter Devilee) is the 4th in the Pathology and Genetics of Tumours series from the WHO. With an impressive set of multidisciplinary contributors from several continents, this book improves on previous books from that organization by representing a reasonable attempt towards consensus in their presentation of the various topics. The main strength of this book, as with others in the series, is that they are concise and emphasize the most salient points in each topic. While it is not meant to be an encyclopedic account of the various tumors, essential definitions, clinical findings, morphologic points, immunophenotypic variations and molecular and/or cytogenetic pathogenesis are well presented.This book does not resolve some of the more controversial issues in these fields (such as the prognostic significance of micropapillary patterns in ovarian serous borderline tumors or terminologic issues in intraductal breast proliferations), but at least provides another framework for further discussion. Great for the expecting dad
This book is very funny and my husband and I really enjoyed it.It brings up alot of questions your husband would think of and explains things in his terms.It helped my husband understand the whole pregnancy thing better.This is a great book for the expecting dad.

Excellent resource for clinicians and parents
Many children who were abused, neglected, or exposed to domestic violence in early childhood have attachment problems.This may lead to violent and other anti-social behaviors.Any clincian helping youth with these problems should read this book.It is helpful, clear, and a great resource.

Quick and easy to read
I liked this book because it was quick and easy to read, but also had more in-depth information in the back.Each month, there is a chart of symptoms to let you know what is important to go to the ER, call your doc, or wait 24 hours to check.There were great decision guides that presented both sides.I like that I know a reputable hospital stands behind the book, as well.I have 6 pregnancy books, but this one is my favorite.

I'm saving mine for child #2
We just had our first baby two months ago and this is the only book I bought to prepare us for the pregnancy and birth. I knew what to expect during each month and pretty much all the questions that come up in between were answered. There is the monthly baby development and mom's physical and emotional changes as the pregnancy progresses. It gives you questions to think about when considering a which physician is best foryou and which will be best for your baby when he/she is born. I read over and over again (pregnant brain) the sections on birthing plans, how labor progresses, the drugs offered, pros/cons of circumcision, and how to care for the baby when you bring it home. Eventually I even got the hang of breastfeeding while reading this book. I will be saving my copy for when we are pregnant again in a few years.

This book doesn't tip toe around the realities of pregnancy. It is very informative and educational. I am now 30 weeks along in my pregnancy and have found myself referring to this book almost every day. I have learned so much about my body, my growing baby and what to truly expect when the delivery happens. The easier-to-read "Bible" of Obstetrics
There are two texts that are considered the most authoritative on the subject of Obstetrics.Williams is edited by the staff at Parkland, the largest Obstetric hospital in the U.S. and not surprisingly, they consider their text to be "the premier source for the specialty". Excellent reference!
This text offers a straight-forward reference to assist in the management of gyn problems I commonly encounter as a Family Doctor.It goes into great detail about anatomy and physiology of gynecologic problems yet is well-organized for use as a "quick reference".For example, it took less than a minute to find the section on hirsuitism to refresh my memory as to what the initial work-up should consist of.

A must have for anyone involved in basic infertility
This is an incredible book.Speroff is still the king when it comes to infertility.In our OB/Gyn setting we refer to it many times in our treatment of basic infertiltiy and have had great success following the guidelines given by Speroff.It should be on the bookshelf of anyone who treats basic infertility!!

Great book for the "alternative' mom
If you are into herbs and natural health and pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant this is a must read! Full of wonderful information and very well written. Was my favorite book during pregnancy and beyond.

Good book about herbal childbearing
I really found this book useful. I've had it for many years and was looking for an herbal book for childbearing when I got it. I have several herb books but like the fact that this one zeros in on one subject. I wasn't really interested in the part about aborting babies, though. All in all, the book is very readable and interesting.

A must have for any woman who is expecting.
