LA PERFECCIÓN DE UNA IDEA PERFECTA
Reconozco que estoy seducido por la serie de textos de radiolog�a que la conjuci�n Osborn/Harnsberger/Stoller et al nos ha regalado. El concepto es tan brillante que el resultado en manos de tan acreditados autores no pod�a ser menos. En el caso del texto sobre cabez y cuello ten�amos como en sus hermanos gemelos un antecedente ilustre, el handbook que tanto �xito tuvo entre los que sin dedicaci�n espec�fica al �rea de cabeza/cuello pretend�an tener una idea de tan dif�cil �rea radiol�gicamente hablando. El texto actual es hijo del anterior pero con la exuberancia iconogr�fica que el concepto nuevo permite. Adem�s de bonito el texto ex maravilloso en estructura, decisi�n de los elementos claves de cada diagn�stico y aportaci�n de im�genes state of art de cada patolog�a y de sus diagn�sticos diferenciales. Ni sobra ni falta nada. No creo que nadie encuentre, por ejemplo en el Som, nada que no tenga aqu� en la mitad de tiempo. Las introducciones anat�micas son pertinentes y van al grano y la selecci�n de patolog�as es absolutamente indiscutible desde ning�n punto de vista. En definitiva y aclarando que no tengo comisi�n alguna en el invento ( qu� mas quisiera yo) dir� que el texto es de obligada compra para cualquier radi�logo que trabaje ocasional o diariamente en el �rea de cabeza y cuello. ... A wonderful, scientific voyage
This book offers a broad coverage of the underlying structures and processes of speech. Beyond a primitive stage, man is unique in his ability to convey information by using his voice. And he has developed this ability from systems designed for more vital goals (eg., respiration and nutrition). In this respect, the work by Seikel, King and Drumright proves a great resource for studying the entire apparatus involved in voice production and perception, specifically the systems of respiration (energy source), phonation (voicing), articulation and resonation filtering), mastication and deglution, hearing, and neural. Furthermore, it includes several appendices for quick access to anatomical terms, morphology of terms, muscles, sensors and nerves, and a review of pathologies affecting production of voice. What I liked the most about the book is that you are systematically guided through all the germane systems, and when pertinent, the book provides references for deeper understanding of the material. Besides, after you have read sufficient content, the book shows summaries for reinforcement of the learnt concepts. Also, there are clinical notes distributed throughout the text, with germane discussions (related processes, pathologies, etc.). And every chapter has a set of questions for assessment of your understanding (do not worry, answers are included!).

Great overall coverage
I am very pleased with this book, and it is so compact!

A "Must Have"for the Physician's reference library
This text is a very complete reference for all the malformations, disruptions and dysmorphologies which affect the craniomaxillofacial region along with the associated clinical findings.It illustrates the etiologies and clinical findings very well with relevant pictures, and most importantly, the literature references which the authors used for each specific syndrome.
Highly unsatisfied
Several pages were missing in the book. Can you please send me another book?

Excellent reference
KJ LEE is an excellent reference text for Otolaryngology students with good explainations and wonderful illustrations.If you are a student wanting to do ENT you would benefit from this book immensely.

controversial
This book has been controversial for at least two reasons. The first reason is if colleagues are asked when to get this [thick, mostly outline format soft covered] text, some say right away for it can serve as a scaffold to "hang information on".And then there are those on the other side of the spectrum who say this book is difficult to take in for the junior folks on the service and should be reserved for those at the chief resident level who know these issues on several levels. A nonessential purchase.
For some reason, this book has become a standard for otolaryngology residents, despite the fact that much of the material is outdated and in some areas, incomplete.The concept for this book would make a great resource, if it really did cover the "essentials". ... Read more

A must have
The second edition is even better than the first one. It is a must for every ENT, Plastic and OMFS residents. Also would be helpful for surgeons in practice to review.

Great new second edition!
I am an Army Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and just looked through my new second edition.I have used this book for several years now, through residency, and have found it to be very helpful.The new 2nd edition is much better with updated photos and illustrations, new approaches, and great explanations.I have shared this book with my ENT/Head & Neck Surgery and Plastic Surgery colleagues.I recommend this text to residents, fellows and practitioners.

For dent stds who are interested in OMFS & OMFS residents
I previewed this book at my school's library and was recommended to me by an OMFS resident during my externship.After flipping through the pages, the illustrations were precise and the surgical approaches and step are spelled out in detail.It was a great to see specific procedures, steps, and illustrations in this reference text after I've seen it in the OR.I've heard that Dr. Ellis is currently working on the 2nd edition of this text due out in August 2005.Can't wait to get my hands on a copy of that edition!Good luck locating a copy of the current edition, it's out-of-print and no online bookstores have this book in stock. ... Excellent text on Dysphagia
It is unfortunate that some reviewers of this book hold such a myopic view. I own this book and find myself referring this and other similar texts, such as "Deglutition and its Disorders" by Adrienne Perlman and Konrad Schulze-Delrieu, frequently. Clearly, not all individuals with dysphagia benefit from dysphagia therapy. In my humble opinion, the skills to identify patients who can benefit from SLP intervention for management of dysphagia and knowing what aspects to work on is a result of a good foundation in this speciality, ongoing continuing education, and direct clinical experience. A good measure of curiousity would help as well. Anyone who wants to learn about dysphagia would best benefit from a graduate level course that deals exclusively with the subject. Unfortunately, not all universities have a dysphagia program. Students are often left to fend themselves. I feel strongly that all SLPs working with individuals with dysphagia should attend on site CE classes offered by well known practitioners, regularly. The field is truly very broad,and a comprehensive review of the system from different perspectives definitely helps me improve my diagnostic and therapeutic skills. Another sign of decay in the SLP field
It is another sign of deterioration in the field of Speech-Language Pathology when the person elected to head the national organization in a time of crisis specializes in a medical procedure, rather than speech and language therapy. The field is in danger of losing even more of its focus and credibility than it already has. Unless SLP's concentrate on the core essentials of slp practice and find and refine treatment methods that have clinical research to back up their efficacy, the future is dim. Branching out into medical methods, as Logemann has done, is irrelevant to the serious needs of slp practice today. That Logemann was elected to head our national organization is a bad sign - not because of any merit or lack of it on her part but because the field seems to have no sense of what direction it should have. In the end, it seems to be a battle among three divisions in our field: those who are simply quacks and who are totally unconcerned with efficacy and who want the field to remain on an intuitive and "artistic/creative" level, those who want to rush into medical procedures that have nothing to do with speech and language problems, and those who want to concentrate on the core essentials of the speech and language disorders which our clients bring to us but who want to junk the quack treatments that discredit the field. What happens in the next few years, and the leadership we are given will determine if the field has a future.

Too bad this stuff doesn't work
Insurance companies are being ripped off every year for millions in order to pay for a therapy that does not work. Speech therapists need to be held accountable to the same degree that physicians are. ... Read more
