5-0 out of 5 stars Great writing, good ideas - best quick read in public health
There have been a number of recent books about health habits and the environment, but this is by far the most enjoyable read. The writing is outstanding and not the clunky prose you often encounter in books written by academics- I wish I could write like them. Although written for a general audience, with (good) human interest anecdotes, the book nevertheless covers some deeper ideas, such as "curve shifting". The idea is that how often we encounter extreme outcomes, whether severe obesity, alcoholism, HIV, depends on "normal" or average behavior in the population. The early chapters that elaborate on those ideas alone are worth reading the book. I don't care too much about "passionate advocacy" and while the authors do fall into the advocacy camp, there is very little of the whining or scolding that has turned me off in other related books. Instead, arguments are generally well balanced even if you know on which side the authors are going to come down. It made a great read for a long flight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cutter Incident
The author presents the science and legal outcomes of this polio vaccine disaster in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. While telling a historical event, the author was aptly able to show how families today are still being affected-making this book a great read for those who have wondered just what is going on with vaccines, vaccine shortages, and the vaccine industry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure Tripe
Frighteningly, Offit argues that Cutter should have been exonerated from liability for killing and maiming children because it was found to have followed government requirements in the manufacture of vaccine found to be harmful, EVEN THOUGH, despite having "followed the right instructions" it KNEW the vaccine still contained live virus and thus was harmful. This is analogous to manufacturing cars that meet all safety requirements stipulated by the government, but then having knowledge that the cars will blow up ANYWAY, and thinking it is still o.k. to put them on the market.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite fascinating
In 1952, the United States suffered its worst ever polio epidemic, with 58,000 people affected. The race was on to perfect a vaccine that would bring this scourge under control. In 1955, following several breakthrough, a vaccine was created, and a huge trial was conducted, involving some 800,000 children, of whom 600,000 were given the vaccine (the rest were given a placebo). However, it quickly became apparent that something had gone wrong. Before all was said and done, 40,000 children contracted polio, 200 were permanently paralyzed, and 10 died. The race was on to find out what had gone wrong.

3-0 out of 5 stars book quality
The book arrived about as timely as I would predict as far as snail mail goes. The quality of the book was poor. When I first opened it, I guess the binding glue was old and crusty because about pages 62-73 fell out.

I've read this book quickly and now plan to use it intensely for my grad studies and my work in public health.Excellent practical advice for those of us on the front line who need to influence health behaviors ofindividuals and groups.Practical advice which is soundly based on theory- adding to the validity of the authors' recommendations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and timely
This is an intellegently written synopsis of the current state of affairs in U.S. healthcare.Halvorson and Isham analyse the strengths and faults of the major attempts to bring the run away cost of health care into some affordable limits. They point out the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. They also have some suggestions for the future so we will not repeat the errors of the past.3-0 out of 5 stars Epidemic of Care
Epidemic of Care provides a succinct overview of what presently ails our nations health care delivery system. It demonstrates how our health care delivery system is really a non-system with millions of independent, uncoordinated, and separately moving parts, priorities and vested interests. The result of this morass, more than forty million uninsured citizens, inconsistent and unaccountable care, and the fastest growing and most wasteful health care delivery economy in the world.5-0 out of 5 stars Care Costs
We Americans are ambitious, aggressive, and full of self-interest. We want the best and the most, and we strive to achieve it. We are resourceful and clever, and we achieve a lot of what we set out to. Mr. Halvorson and Dr. Isham show how much we have accomplished in clinical science, especially in how doctors and institutions provide health care to individuals. But they also show how little regard we have to the financial cost of providing that care. They describe the fiscal and social trade-offs that occur in our medical economy all the time. Very few of us entrepreneurs, politicians, social leaders or patients are even minimally conscious of these costs. Reading this book will change how you listen to the next story about a premature baby or a liver transplant, and it ought to change how you think about the health care you consume. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Principles and Practice of Public Health Surveillance
This text book is an excellent reference for epidemiologists and health professionals who need to establish surveillance systems. The text book takes the beginner by the hand and explains what to do (what are the essential tasks required to decide, what data do you need to collect, and what for what specific purpose you might use it) and how to do it (steps to take and considerations in management of systems and quality control) and how to make sense of the data you've collected (data analyses).

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic - worth the wait
As a graduate student many years ago, I bought the last shelf copy of the first edition to Caswell's text on matrix population models for our bookstore. After 10+ years of using the book, both in research, and teaching, I'm glad I did. The 2nd edition is a lucid and masterful update, with several nice touches that should be appreciated by both newcomers and experienced modelers. In particular, some of the more turgid text from the first edition has been clarified, and expanded, and several new very important chapters have been added (yes, using branching process theory you can handle demographic stochasticity with matrix models). A superb book, made even better by the inclusion (at last!) of some basic MATLAB code for some of the more esoteric calculations. My only complaint (related perhaps to the 'code') is that the many good 'worked examples' are not treated more fully. I'd have liked to have seen the actual matrices involved, or some further detail, in some cases, rather than a figure or table summarizing the results. However, a minor complaint - perhaps easily solved by a companion website with code for each example in the book 9something I'm probably going to do on my own, but should be standard these days for any technical text).

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and accessible introduction to population modeling
There is often a false dichotomy drawn between differential (or difference) equation models of populations and agent-based (artificial life, individual-based, configuration) models.Agent-based models canrepresent more of the complexity of biological systems at the expense ofanalytical tractability.Matrix population models form a bridge betweenthe two approaches.Read more

If you've heard of alpha-lipoic acid and its being extremely helpful in treating diabetes, liver illnesses, mercury intoxications, or as an anti-oxidant, you may want to know more about it before taking it.This book, by Burt Berkson (MD, PhD) is an excellent answer to your worries.Berkson describes how he got to be interested by alpha-lipoic acid, it's safety record ("FDA"-approved in Germany for 50 years), it's uses, and perhaps most interesting, his views on medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise overview of the current state of public health
In 15 short chapters (about 15 pages each) the current state of public health is discussed by a number of experts. After two introductory chapters, the core nine chapters describe the situation of public health on the various continents. The last chapters cover the newly emerging threat of bioterrorism, ethical issues and the future. The book gives a concise overview of the current state of global public health. I liked the chapter on ethical dilemmas: very down to earth discussion of a topic that can easily lead to emotional rather than rational discussions.

Based on this review major global health threats, challenges and opportunities for the new era are identified and discussed. Read more
