A Masterful Medical Book of Great Importance Written by a Nobel Laureate!
I am a Female Reconstructive Surgeon who while reading a diversified field of topics have fallen very fond of a particular work.This is Principles of Neural Science.having just completed the 2000 edition I can guarrantee that the new edition due June 2006 will be even more captivatiing.If you have the opportunity to see Dr Kandel speak please do he is an academic historian who gives a broad history of each critical piece of medical history to each of his topics.But returning tohis epic, Principles of Neural Science is akin to Newtons Principia in that is a sublime masterpiece.The Kandell prose is colorful, smooth and insightful for medical science.I havefound it easy to read 100-200 pages a day so that the 1400 page book took only a week to discover.The illustrations are the best for any field of Medicine and I have read alll the classics- Harrisions & Cecils Medicine and Schwartz and Sabistons General Surgery neither of these books elucidates the subjugate field with this type of clarity and instructional prose.Do as I have done and preorder the new edition.Those with any interest in the brain will certainly be amazed at the easy depth of information you will achieve.Believe meI am writing a book -Female Reconstructive Surgery and I will be implementing operative 17.2 million pixel photography to achieve the splendid vision the Kandel has produced with his illustrations.I have learned so much on how a book for Surgeons should be written from this Nobel Laureate

Excellent reference, extremely comprehensive!
Don't be deceived by the size of this book--Although it probably weighs more than I do, I have to say that kandel et.al, present the information in a clear, extremely comprehensible manner with a good deal of interesting experiments, clinical studies, and graphs/images to help illustrate the concepts discussed. Although this book is essentially meant for graduate students, it is highly accessible to undergrads and I am tempted to say anyone else, regardless of their science background. The table of contents and the index also principles of neural science a GREAT reference book. This should definately be a companion to any college (or above) level neuroscience course! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Neurons, Diseases, and Brains... Oh My!
Every parent knows the agony of trying to find a book to read to their kids at bedtime, but I am happy to report that Kandel has boldly brought a neuroscience entry into to a genre dominated by wizards and talking animals. From the major, one sentence headings every few paragraphs to the bold, brightly colored pictures, this book will hold the attention of even the antsiest of your little ones.

Get rid of back pain - FOREVER
Hello All. I am 29 currently and I have had backpain on and off for over 9 years now. After a particularly nasty back spasm at the gym 2 years back ( where I could hardly walk), I was getting desparate. I looked at physiotherapy,and briefly at some other forms of exercise. I could not find lasting results anywhere and then I came across this book. It was god send. I read it in couple of hours flat. Re-read it next day. Thought a lot about what the author suggests are reasons behind the pain. It is generated from within and the cure also should come from within us. Anyone who thinks that cure CAN ONLY come fromoutside is going to be looking for a cure, the rest of their lives. I analyzed the book ( I am an engineer) and trusted the book.
5 years with back pain, no back pain for 6 years.
There I was, 18 years old, after exercising badly in the gym I developed back issues. An x-ray stated I had a back abnormality. For 5 years I had back pain, evey single day, mid to lower back pain. You know whats its like, the type thats always there.
Great Book!
Dr. Sarno is a true pioneer in regards to diagnosing and treating back pain and has made a tremendous contribution with his discovery of the mind/body connection for this condition. I did, however, as a number of reviewers have pointed out, after reading Healing Back Pain felt the need for additional steps.

Med-Surg Study Guide
Reading the reviews posted on this page I'm beginning to wonder what everyone else is looking at. For those of you looking for information on the *Study Guide* I hope this helps.
Great for building strong arms!
Lifting this book was about the only thing this book was good for.For actually taking a test I scored MUCH higher when I used the Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN. Saunders told me what I needed to know for my test, and that is really all I have time for.

Very Readable; One of the Best in My Experience
I have now in my 3rd semester of using this nursing textbook. I understand the hatred for textbooks in general, but hatred for this textbook specifically is beyond me. In contrast to the many other reviews on Amazon, I have found the book extremely well written. I have likely read every word of over half of this textbook and have found it to be the most helpful of all of those textbooks we have used in the nursing program with the exception of Lehne's Pharmacology text which is exceptional.

Strong, current review of general surgery
This is THE book for a senior surgical resident to purchase. It is updated every 3 years, and reflects advances in techniques, preoperative and postoperative evaluation, and clinical management decision making for all of the commonly encountered problems in general surgery. The authors do not merely rehash the previous edition, but present the information in a clear, concise, and enjoyable text with good tables and images. It has been very helpful to me in my Chief year, and I expect it to help me pass my boards. A MUST HAVE!!!

Excellent book
A must for every surgical resident and surgeon. Great for studying for the oral boards these are safe and accepted answers.

Great Review for Surgical Examinations
Those who are goinig to sit the general surgery examinations would find this book a great assistance. The book is well written and easy to read and understand. After thoroughly reading this book and a major surgical textbook e.g. Sabiston's Surgery would the chances of passing any surgical examination very high. It's an up to date reference in general surgical diagnosis & therapy. The busy general surgeon would find it a very useful soucce. Classic, gold standard
There is only one Hoppenfeld.For what it is, it's the best.It's all diagnosis.Not a word on treatment.But it gives a good review of not just the physical exam but also the underlying anatomy and biomechanics.Two other books are worth getting.Magee's Orthopedic Physical Assessment is a good background book to have on your shelf.It's written by a physical therapist, so the perspective is a little different if you're an MD or DO, but it's still useful.Lots of physical exam maneuvers.Cooper's Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis is short and sweet and gives diagnostic work up as well as treatment insights.

Excellent book
It is definitely the best Plastic Surgery text ever and Amazon is great regarding deliveries.I always use their service and am very pleased.

Let the buyer beware
I am a Plastic Surgeon and thus very interested in the subject matter. The The Text is actually very good but you will be cheated with the online access. 1. access is slow. Elsevier has not fixed this problem since it was brought to their attention last summer. 2. There is a floating copyright notice that moves over the illustrations. This is incredibly annoying and distracting. 3. You will only be allowed to access the Online Edition from two different computers. What good is that if you work in six or seven different locations. 4. You will not be allowed to export any illustrations for use in teaching etc.

Least expensive tool to relieve pain!
I am a licensed Massage therapist in Hawaii.I stumbled upon Elaine's book and started using it for my neck & back pain.I was pleasantly surprised at how deep my muscles and spine could be worked while I did two simple things Breath and Relax.Although breathing and relaxing is simple it becomes more difficult the longer the balls are in one position and works deeper into the muscles.At that point I choose either to move positions or focus on relaxing further and deeper breathing to let the ball(s) work deeper.
Best gift for chronic pain
This little kit, is a really wonderful and inexpensive way to change your life. Like most office workers, sitting for 8 hours a day, gives a lot of lower back pain and piraformis syndrome.These balls are great to relieve the pain. The only warning I have is to watch how long you stay on the balls.In some areas of the book, she recommends staying on as long as you want.This can do damage if your body isn't ready for it.I made the mistake and did too much of a good thing.Release the muscles and relax into the balls, but remove them and relax some more.This is the perfect workout if you hold your tension, stress and emotions in your muscularture.If you do, and try the workout, you will be free, relaxed, and happy!

Excellent for reference and study
This is now the fourth edition of this textbook that the reviewer has purchased.The first edition was the reviewer's companion during the senior year of medical school and residency training, when the appropriate sections were read whenever encountering patients with one of the discussed diseases.The second edition was the reviewer's most-used texbook during preparation for the anesthesiology oral examination.Most recently, a second copy of this most recent edition was purchased as the required textbook for a resident rotation in preoperative evaluation.This book has a place on the shelf of any anesthesiologist who is preparing for the oral boards or in practice.
Very Good
This book is very good for the integration of patient care with pathophysiological conditions or co-morbidities. A must have before addressing your patients with higher ASA number assignments.

Great book for the wards and the NBME shelf
This is a must have during surgery clerkships. It's broken down into concise chapters that can quickly be reviewed (5-10 minutes) before a case or a conference. For example, we had a right hepatic lobectomy case on a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. I spent about 20 minutes in the physicians locker room reviewing the liver chapters before the case. In surgery, I was easily able to answer nearly all questions from the staff surgeon and the chief resident. Most pimp questions can be found in this book. This book definitely gives you an edge on the clerkship. It provides fast access to many pertinent concepts that you'll need day in and day out on the wards, in the SICU and in the OR. Many pocket textbooks are just dead weight in your coat. This one is actually very useful.
Pimpin' ain't easy...
But Surgical Recall makes it easier.Basically, people get Recall for two reasons:1)they're not interested in surgery but have to rotate and do well in itor 2)they're genuinely interested in surgery.

Geat Resource on the Subject.
This book offers insight to pain managment and lay out of patient procedures and functional use for pain controll. Highly recommend for students and doctors a like. Need strong medical back ground for the latter chapters, a good refernce for boards and residence programs.

Great book
I have recently received my book and am thrilled.I have seen it at several pain meetings, but hadn't pulled the trigger on which pain book would give me my most bang for the book (Waldman, Raj, etc.).Image-Guided Spine Intervention is an excellent book and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, that is being a "how-to" book with superb imaging.In fact, I have yet to see a book that has more clear images than this book.While there are a few things that are missing in this book (discographic manometry, kyphoplasty-although the book came out just as this was emerging), all in the book is well worth the price.Reading Dr. Petersohn's commentary I wonder if we received the same book.The book is a "how-to" book and therefore is not intended to give clinical algorithms, although I admit it would make it an even more comprehensive book.The authors made the patient positioning understandable by referring to the projection with relation to the patient as opposed to the direction of the x-ray beam, which can be confusing.Perhaps in future editions, both positioning techniques can be given.With cervical transforaminal injections, one does not need a limiting AP projection to make sure one does not have cord or subdural penetration.If you follow their positioning and technique and intentionally hit the superior articular process, then walk a few mm anteriorly, you will necessarily be in the correct position, which is confirmed with contrast.For thoracic facet injections, previous reports including Dreyfuss demonstrate that one needs to start well inferior to the facet joint and angle cephalad in order to enter the coronally oriented thoracic facets.This book describes a technique, which demonstrates that this does not need to be done and that one can take a straight AP approach (proven with a CT injection) and still get the contrast into the entire joint.Dr. Chua's thoracic medial branch anatomy was just published this last year and post-dates this book.I agree there is no reason to give steroid after a facet denervation.The chapter on pharmacology was adequate for all pain practitioners.The book never sets out to be something to study for the boards.The statement "may be appropropriate for radiologists or physiatrists" sounds fairly hostile as well.As for discography, their approach to lumbar discography is reasonable.NASS and ISIS are only GUIDELINES not standards and there is no proof that there is an increased infection rate with single STYLETTED needle discography vs. double needle technique.They do not complain about L5-S1 access, rather that it is more difficult and that double-needle technique is often unnecessary.It makes sense to perform discography with a single needle since the new intradiscal procedures are performed that way.The authors do not list "pseudoarthrosis" as a contraindication to discography, but do list a solid posterolateral bone fusion as one due to lack of access.Read more

an inner journey
Atul Gawande's book "Complications" is a rewarding read on many levels.The reader is drawn in smoothly along a thread of entertaining medical vignettes.These anecdotes serve as the framework for a set of well reasoned essays that explore the inner life of the surgeon.Gawande's primary purpose is to convey thevarious challenges, surprises, and contradictions that he has encountered as a surgical resident.His scrupulous honesty in describing the motivations, limitations, exhilarations, foibles, and challenges of the surgical profession is refreshing.
Brilliantly written reflections of what it is to work in medicine
This book was required for a friend's ethics class and she could not stop talking about it! I had to read it, too, thanks to her. We are nursing students, about to embark on our clinical rotations, and have both been strongly affected by this real and wonderfully written book. Dr. Gawande really has captured everything for the reader, who is left profoundly more knowledgable about a challenging and difficult, but rewarding, profession. He is amazing!

A Glimpse Behind The Curtain
The medical profession, for much of its lifetime, has been shrouded in mystery. For many, the words and judgements of a doctor seem infallible, which is why there is often such incredulity associated with mistakes. It's only been in the past few decades that this has changed and people are learning that doctors are humans too. In Atul Gawunde's book, we get a behind the scenes look at his life as a resident in Internal Medicine and some of the truths that people must accept take place when they enter a hospital. What amazes me most about Gawunde's writing is his use of anecdotes to perpetuate his arguments and ideas. His experiences have been so rich and varied that he is able to draw upon so many fascinating cases to highlight some of the great and some of the not so great aspects of medicine and of learning to be a physician. Anyone who would like to be a doctor - and especially those who want to go into any surgical field - will benefit from this open and honest account of what it truly means to be a doctor. Treat Your Own Neck
very clear and useful information.Has helped considerably with my neck pain and headaches.

I wish I had read this book 20 years ago!
This book is an easy read, with easy to follow pictures of how to do the exercises, some of which are so simple that I can do them in my car while sitting at a stoplight.The book shows how to do about 5 exercises that not only relieve neck pain -they ward off future occurences of it.Also helpful was the photos of postures to avoid while sitting, driving, and sleeping - I didn't know how important that was.I also recommend "Treat Your Own Back", also by Robin A. McKenzie.

Get New Updated version instead!
This book totally saved my life.I picked it up on the way to a Christmas craft fair I was working...and during the afternoon I did a few of the exercizes along with some in Treat Your Own Back.The relief was instant.I couldn'tbelieve it!The only thing about these books is that Robin McKenzie has updated his method and combined both books into "7-Steps to a Pain Free Life:How to Rapidly Relieve Back and Neck Pain" by Craig Kubey and Robin McKenzie.So...get the updated version instead! ... Must Have Text
This is a must have book for those who actually care to learn about implant dentistry from one of the leading figures in the field.Each chapter is well written and complete.You can access each chapter if you seek out specific information, or you can read the entire text front cover to last page.
Gospel of Carl
For quite a few years this remains the most comprehensive and enjoyable book in my implant library.

Everything you need to know
I have been a practicing dentist for 29 years and restoring implants since 1991. I am in the process of becoming board certified to now place my own fixtures.Misch does a fantastic job of bringing into view a number of treatment modalities and what the potential pitfalls can be if each particular step is not followed.Much better than the text book that the school is using.Anyone that is considering restoring and or placing fixtures and intends to get predictable esthetic and functional results needs to read this book. ... Wonderful Book!!!
This book is excellent for all the new surgical technologists and ST students out there! This book lays it down in simple, almost layman-like terms but is very thorough. Everythng you need to prepare for a case you have never done is in this book. I cannot say enough about how greatly helpful this book is! It has gotten me through alot of stressful situations! If you read this book the night before or right before a case the MD will think you are the greatest thing since sliced bread because it really tells you EVERYTHING you need to know! Excellent Rehab Book
This book is an excellent resource for any Certified Athletic Trainer, experienced or entry-level. Several rehab protocols are outlined for many common injuries seen in athletics as well as the general population. There is a general review of anatomy as well that proves helpful.

Not quite what I expected
Zollinger's features very good illustrations and notes (including postoperative care) for nearly every imaginable procedure in gastrointestinal surgery (including exotic and complex operations such as total pancreatectomy and Klatskin tumor resections), short of bariatric surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, fundoplication and splenectomy are covered as well. fantastic, artistic
Truely one of the most successful books of the kind, the strucure is well designed, the operations included cover a eide range of procedures, and most noticeble is the very high quality of the explanatory figures, sometimes by just brawsing through them you get 80% of what to do... the text is well written and concise. You will find many approaches for each operation. of course it will be impossible to gather all the surgical craft in one book. but this one succeeds in collecting a large chunk of it. i highly recommend it for all juniors and postgrads alike. ... good for interns, simple for surgeons, very superficial for specialists
Ok, when compared to the "I can read series for surgery (ACS surgery)" this book obviously has much more valuable data and in depth chapters. But this book is simply lacking the information which is crucial for advanced learners. esp. the breast is simple for even 3.year med students. too many errors very unfortunate for such a book with reputation. many chapters are lacking detailed information, badly organized text, reads like a british book, not very appealing for people who are used to reading american texts only. try reading sample chapters before buying one.

Too vague, boring to read
Unlike voluminous texts like Harrison's, I find this text written in such a fashion that it becomes a chore to read. Given, I am not going into surgery, but any well written textbook should hold someone's interest. I find the book too vague and low yield for medical students and probably too simplistic for surgical residents. Needless to say, I am going to try to sell it before the new edition comes out.

Too many errors
I "converted" from Greenfield, pleased with the new changes to Sabiston which included better quality paper, consistent diagrams and illustrations throughout the book, and concise but relevant discussions within the chapters.This book seemed more practical than Greenfield did.Furthermore, many of the contributors are my attendings and I rely on their brilliance and expertise daily.
