Indispensible for the serious birder
This book is one of my favorite birding books. I am reticent to call it a field guide because it is so much more than that. Incredible amounts of information on all the sparrows. Great range maps AND descriptions of migration and vagrancy (can I hope to see this bird in my area?), and all the other natural history and behavior information you'd expect. Beautiful plates showing ALL the different plumages, primary and basic, male, female and juvenal. And it's not just a wealth of information, it's a beautiful book, well written and a delight to own.

A readable, useable, technical guide.

Excellent conceptually
It's certainly not complete or perfect, and as a reviewer notes, contains some omissions and errors.However, while a textbook should strive to be as good as possible in those areas, it's no substitute for the primary literature in peer-reviewed journals and shouldn't be viewed as such, and instead should be seen as more of a conceptual introduction, in which I feel it does well.It avoids the tempting parade-of-taxa style, and instead focuses on the important concepts uniting reptiles and to an extent all animals, such as osmoregulation, feeding, locomotion, reproductive strategies, etc.
Anurans and Squamates and Crocodylia! Oh, my!
This is easily the best herpetology text book out there. It is informative, yet not full of the boringness (if that's a word...) of many textbooks. You might say that it's...fun to read.

Herp Textbook
I have just finished an undergradute course which used this book as the main text.I agree with the previous reviewer that there is considerable overlap and occasional contradiction.The early chapters tend to use a lot of technical jargon, and seem to be written for people who alreadyunderstand the material.I was not so impressed with phylogenicdescriptions which frequently failed to discuss unifying characteristicswithin families.Later sections, including locomotion, water balance, andmate selection are well written.This book would benefit from a glossary,more relevant tables and figures, and a more inclusive index.Overall,editing is rather sketchy. ... Animal Physiology
From explaining how a mammal can stay underwater for lengthy periods, to how a camel can survive without water for days, this is a fascinating description of all types of animals and their unique ways of living. I never knew quite how fish breathe, nor how birds survive freezing temperatures.This is one book I can pick up, open to any page, and find the contents more intriguing than any mystery. It explains in depth the most recent current knowledge with examples of studies when researchers are still unclear about the answers. I am a nurse, not a physiologist, and find it easily comprehensible.

A good buy for any biologist/zoologist
Dr. Hill is as wonderfully knowledgable and intelligent in his writing as he is in his teaching. Fortunate enough to have him as a professor and, incidentally, use his book (co-written with Wyse) as a resource, I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in animal physiology or to any biologist/zoologist. ... Scholastic perfection
I've been in an accredited university for fifteen years studying the intricacies of physiology. I have never come across a book that was executed to such perfection. The photos are astonishing in their clarity and intimate setting. The narration is concise and very clear, almost to the point where you want to phone the author and congratulate him on his accomplishment. If you are thinking of pursuing any kind of biological/medical field than I highly recommend this fine piece of art. It will soon be Shakespearean in its influence. Don't trust the simple words of my fellow plebian reviewers; this book is the second coming of the Bible.

A physiology instructor weighs in on this book
I have been teaching University-level physiology for over 10 years. I have used at least a dozen books, from the "essentials" to the "encyclopedic". For a one-semester course on physiology that emphasizes recurring mechanisms from a cellular and organ-level perspective, with a great introduction to ecological physiology thrown in, Eckert cannot be beat. In my experience, the vast majority of students respond better to Eckert's illustrations than to the endless flow charts that appear in most of the other books.It nicely fills the niche between "just the basics" essentials texts (which are simply not rigorous enough for biology majors) and the "every little detail" encyclopedic texts that most students find bewildering. If I had to learn animal physiology from just one textbook, this would be it; and I'd save the cell & molecular details from one of THOSE specialty texts instead.The ONLY criticism I have about Eckert is its nearly complete lack of consideration of the immune system. ... wonderful detailed photos of horse anatomy!
I am a pre-vet student and I have learned so much from this book. This book shows and names everything inside of the horse. It is very graphic with photos of freshly dissected specimens that are clearly labeled. Great book
I think this is a must have book for anyone interested in wildlife medicine, it helped me a great deal through college and i'm still needing it!

The most disappointing book in the series...
When this book first came out, I thought it would be great. I was very disappointed by the brevity and superficial coverage of the chapters. This book, in order to be a truly comprehensive reference, should have been three times as big. This is the first time that a new edition is actually less useful than an older edition (Fowler 2 is a lot better!). The quality of chapters is very variable, with some being excellent and some flat out atrocious. (The crocodilian chapter is the best example of a "lacking" chapter). There are also a lot of typos (different spelling for some drug names) and inaccurate doses, which is disappointing. There are a lot of tables that are neither user-friendly nor clinically useful. However, this is one place to start with reference material to zoo animal species. It is not as nice as Fowler #2, but certainly more up to date and easier to acquire. It just has a "draft form" feel to it in content and editing. The book seems to be printed in a cheap quality paper that rips way too easily.

disappointingly limited by format
Numbers 3 and 4 of this series were updates of specific topics, much like the "current veterinary therapy" series.This, like Editions 1 and 2, attempts to cover all of zoo medicine in one volume.As this is a rapidly expanding body of knowledge, it is no longer really possible to fit into a single volume.There are very brief overviews of each species without enough depth present- this is not due to the authors, but the format.Especially disappointing is the apparent limitation on the number of references for each section.Providing references on where to look for further information would have made this book much more useful.Hopefully future editions will either show a return to the topic oriented format of 3 and 4, be a multi-volume set containing enough information to be useful, or at least contain sufficient references to be useful as a good bibliography. ... True Confessions of a Veterinarian
This is an enjoyable and enlightening book.The tales are short, funny, educational, and personal.Anyone who loves animals will love this book.I hope there is a followup book with more stories.

I so enjoyed this book
I have so enjoyed reading Dr. Witiak's book. It has brought giggles, tears, and insight into the field of veterinary medicine. This passionate doctor shows his love for his patients and their owners through cleverly written snippets of interactions. His writing reminds me of James Herriot, one of my favorite authors, who wrote about his life as a veterinarian. It is a compliment when some of his pet owners say, "We wish you were our family's doctor." Truly a delightful book!

Gene Witiak's TRUE CONFESSIONS OF A VETERINARIAN reveals him to be a caring and insightful person. Clearly, he cares about both animals and people, has lots of empathy for both, understands their strengths and weaknesses and how to maximize his skills to advance their welfare.

Great Book for beginer to advanced

Worth the money and your time!

A comprehensive book forDog Breeders
I have many books on dog breeding on my shelves. This one is different in several ways. It is written in textbook fashion with a FAQ section at the front of and a "Test your understanding" quiz at the end of each chapter. It uses color photographs to show you what the author is talking about when describing specific conditions or situations. It is written in laymans language making it easy to understand and yet it is comprehensive enough for the long time breeder to learn something new.

All you need to identify raptors in Europe(almost!)
When I heard about this book I knew that I'd end up buying it,as I am a raptor fanatic(unfortunately its use is limited here in Ireland, as only three raptor species are in any way common,and very few migrant raptorsoccur) All of the regular European species(plus Lappet-faced Vulture) aredepicted,with the number of photos seemingly varying in proportion todifficulty of identification.The text is fairly technical,but readableenough,and there isn't an excess of jargon(thank God!)I first used it toage a Marsh Harrier this January as an adult female,and in this respect itwas of great use. It also helped me to tentatively age a Buzzard in lateFeb. as a 2nd-year bird.I have yet to be confronted by a raptor which Iactually haven't identified to species before consulting this book, but ifI do I would turn to this book straight away.Also,many of the photos aresuperb,and whet the appetite for species that I have yet to see (all buteight of them!)The section at the start about moult etc. is extremelyinteresting also.If you live in Europe and have an interest in raptors,buythis book.Now,about that trip tothe continent....... ...
