5-0 out of 5 stars Great veterinary resource, NOT for pet owners
I love my nerdbook; I'm not on clinics yet but I use it to work through mock cases and as a review tool.It contains the basics for working up common problems and is a concise resource for simple questions.I am troubled by the review by a pet owner, though. This is not at all designed as a first aid for pets book and is written for an audience with much more understanding of animal health and medicine than even an educated pet owner. It's dangerous to think you know more than you do and can result in not seeking trained medical care when it is warranted. So, while it is great for vet students and interns it is not for pet owners.Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pocketguide for interns/students
This is an excellent pocket guide for final year students or interns in small animal hospitals. It covers not only internal medicine but orthopedics as well. Despite minor errors, it is still the best there is. It is used in veterinary teaching hospitals all over the U.S.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MEDICAL REFERENCE FOR PET OWNERS
I'm sure this book is a godsend to veterinary students. But I'm not a veterinary student, I use it to learn about and understand possible problems, their symptoms and treatment, so that I can be more vigilant withmy pets, and have a better conversation with my veterinarian.Yes, it'smore challenging to the understanding of the average pet owner, but it'sfar more authoritative than the average "first aid for your pet"book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for Dogs and Cats
I can recommend this book to anyone that wants to improve the health of their dog or cat. I have a special needs dog and I needed information on the proper supplements and food to feed him.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking substance
Save your money, this book will just give you the briefest of overviews. If you are interested in dog health or have a dog with an allergy problem, this is not the book to buy.Even the overviews are incomplete, a fluff piece. You would do better looking up animal allergies on the internet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me keep my sanity while helping my best friend!
This is one of the more recent and thorough books on skin problems in dogs.Incidentally, skin problems are the most common problem for canines. The book is laid out like an encyclopedia by technical name of problem. It shows pictures of severe cases of many problems, and lists the mostcommon problems by breed. The useful appendices allow you to crossreference your information to be sure you've uncovered all that youcan.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful
If you read all the reviews, you will see that one misguided person entered a low ranking 4 times to unfairly negatively impact the results.(It appears that that person may be a self-styled expert, but not a veterinarian.)Other reviews attest to how useful a book like this can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick answers to urgent questions
Other veterinary guides to canine health are more comprehensive, but this one is perfect for those times when you need to know something right away. The chapters are organized broadly by symptom; within each chapter, charts enable you to quickly determine 1) the possible cause(s) of your dog's problem and 2) if this is a condition that needs immediate or eventual vet care. The information is organized to help you narrow the field of possible conditions by evaluating associated symptoms.A previous reviewer has apparently tried to decrease the overall rating of this book by submitting their negative review repeatedly, an unfair practice in itself, but I think the reveiw itself is off base as well. Many conditions are described as non-urgent, and for those, useful home remedies are suggested.(The remedies I've tried work.)This book doesn't offer in-depth information on canine illnesses or disorders, but it is very helpful as a first-aid, first-place-to-look resource. It's possible that there are better guides out there--I haven't read them all.But this is the best one I've seen for quickly answering the questions, What do my dog's symptoms mean? and Do I need to see the vet?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Must Haves!!
This book is a great reference for any owner and is so easy to use. It has saved me a couple trips to the emergency animal centers in the middle of the night. It is written simply to help you know what you can handle and what is a true emergency to take to the vet. If your looking for a more indepth explanation to different diseases and illnesses this isn't an encycolpedia of information, but if you want something that you can easily look up a symptom or multiple symptoms in chart form with a simple solution this is it! It is also wonderful that it tells you what breeds of dogs are prone to what problems to give you a better picture of what could be happening to your dog. Just last week my dog was sneezing very labored and constant and after 10 minutes he wouldn't stop and you could clearly see he was starting to panic but I could see nothing was in his nose but he kept on. After 15 minutes we knew something was wrong he was pacing, and wouldn't calm down and since it was 11:00pm we would have to drive a 1/2 hour to the emergency animal hospital so we had decide something quick. My husbend remembered this book and he looked it up and he had what was called reverse sneezing and it said to give him wet food. We did and he stopped sneezing almost immediately. Just this morning my friend called me to say her dog was lame and had a fever and asked me to look it up and see what this book had said about it. I can't tell you enough how wonderful a book this is! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book turned sorrow into solutions
Having just been diagnosed this year with diabetes, my beloved Coco and I were struggling with the newness of our changed routine, diet, schedule etc. This book helped educate me and put it all in perspective and find the right program for Coco.
5-0 out of 5 stars HUGE help for my blind dog!
My dog, Scout, was diagnosed with SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration) so I ordered this book along with "Living With Blind Dogs".That one helped with day-to-day issues, but "Dogs, Diet, and Disease" really helped with the health problems that came along with SARDS.We followed the author's suggestions for a more natural diet and lifestyle, and a few months later we did the lab tests recommended by the author and started hormone replacement therapy. What a difference it made!Scout's vision didn't change, but I have my old dog back.No more depression!A normal appetite! This is the only book to my knowledge that discusses SARDS, offers scientific research, and a plan of care for these dogs.My vet read it too. We're both big fans!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone coping with these illnesses in dogs!
This is by far the most comprehensive book for dog owners on the topics of Cushing's Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, and Pancreatitis that I have ever seen! Ms. Levin's professional background as a Registered Nurse with experience in endocrinology has enabled her to explain the illnesses in clear detail, and to educate owners on how they can better care for their dogs at home. This book covers much more than any vet could during an office visit, in language that is compassionate, supportive, and helpful. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars worth the money for anyone interested in rabbit health
I HIGHLY reccommend this book to anyone interested in rabbit health, veterinarian, pet owner or rabbit breeder. I am the latter and found this book to be incredibly useful. One will need a basic knowledge of general biology to get their way through the book. I've raised rabbits very successfully for seven years. After reading this I changed many things I thought i had been doing right but now, thanks to the book, I am getting even better results. Its well worth every penny. I've won awards for rabbit knowledge so I had no idea that I'd learn a thousand times more from this book. i've actually taught our veterinarian a few things as she is the one who recommended the book to me. I've learned the most amazing and useful facts that have worked wonders, and they are the simplest things. Who knew that regular honey had healing properties strong enough to cure my rabbits severe case of ulcerative pododermatitis? he was so bad off the vet thought that i was crazy to not put him down. but I'm happy to say he's very much alive, 4 months later and is able to live an almost normal life. this is only one of millions (I mean MILLIONS) of useful little facts that will completely changed the most skilled rabbit fancier's way of looking at things. this book has saved the life of one of my rabbits and has given me sucessful suggestions for treatments to several other problems that even my vet who is a 25-year rabbit breeder herself didn't know. i urge you to get this book. It really can save the lives of rabbits and teach the most knowledeable person many new things

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook of Rabbit Medicine has much good information
Rabbit medicine is a difficult subject to cover.Although our knowledge has increased greatly in the last ten years, there is still much we do not know.Harcourt-Brown does a very good job of describing medical problems that are common in rabbits, and provides information on treatment. She also provides valuable information on biological characteristics and husbandry.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable title for veterinarians
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry.Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences.Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques.Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars limited use
I found the information on behaviour and animal welfare to be limited and, in places, questionable. For example the use of single animal hanging cages is treated as standard husbandry -- despite the strong recommendation in most national laws and guidleines that social contact and environmental enrichment be provided to rats in the laboratory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ref Book
This book has a lot to say....excellent reference book. If you do anything with the rat, then you need this book inspite of the price. The authors did a thorough job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Important but overpriced.
This book is a welcome addition for the in vivo investigator; we know so much about the theoretical bases of our experiments, but how many of us really have any formal knowledge of our most important research tools, theanimals themselves? For this reason, and in the interest of the generalwelfare of my experimental rats, I bought the book. There is muchinteresting and useful information presented by veterinarians whospecialize in lab animal medicine.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The images are horrible!
This is an unfortunate effort in that the ultrasound images that ought to be the highlightof this text are just simply inadequate. Far to many of the ultrasound images are too bright and lack resolution. They do not clearly demonstrate the various lesions. In fact, anyone who uses this text to learn either what a diagnostic image is, or how to interpret an image will be sorely disappointed. The exceptions are the cardiology images and the reproductive images. The text is okay, but with the poor images I would look elsewhere. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's a lot easier for the layperson to tell when a fellow human is feeling poorly than it is to understand the inner workings of a cat. For one thing, people use words to tell you what hurts and when it started. And for another thing, we, as fellow people, have a little insight into what's healthy human behavior and what isn't. When the toddler cries and then vomits lunch, we sense something's not right, even if the child can't verbalize the problem. But when your cat brings up a hairball, does that mean she is ill? When your cat meows, it's hard to know if it means "Hey, pet me," or "I feel rotten."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Guide, Helpful for Quick Reference
I was pleased with the covering of information about normal cat behavior and normal cat functions--so as to better determine such with my own cats. However, the book is not comprehensive in its covering of abnormalites of feline health.I do like that it lists little icons next to various symptoms and diseases referring to the urgency of the situation. This book is a nice base covering of information to know about your cats in general, and for several problems that might arise over their life span.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall book.
This book really helped us out because we thought our cat was not only crazy, but also sick.Sick and crazy is a bad combo.Turned out she just had allergies and typical cat spaz behavior. The book goes in depth to let you know what is going on with your pet so you don't have to shell out the big bucks to a vet.If you do have to go to a vet for something you can help them pinpoint the problem much quicker if you have done some research using the book beforehand.5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST IF YOU NEED HELP FOR YOUR CAT BUDDY

The newest addition to Blackwell Publishing's "The 5-Minute Veterinary Consult: Clinical Companion" series, Canine And Feline Infectious Diseases And Parasitology is the impressively collaborative work of Stephen C. Barr and Dwight D. Bowman, two very highly qualified and respected experts in the field of canine and feline infectious diseases and parasite- related disorders. Written especially for clinicians and veterinary medicine students, Canine And Feline Infectious Diseases And Parasitology presumes the reader's basic familiarity with its particular topic as well as veterinary medicine in general. Each of the 105 chapters is devoted to a specific disease or parasite, arranged in alphabetical order; color photographs add a valuable visual touch to this no-nonsense diagnostic and treatment manual. Highly recommended -- especially for professionals in the field.
