finally, a concrete diagnosis, and a happy dog
I read this book when my dog was so sick wth chronic ear infections (that were not responding to the typical prescription drugs) that she had to have 2 benadryl every 4 hours--and this is when she was already on a hypoallergenic diet. Three vets said she had food allergies (she did appear to react worse to some foods, and did somewhat better on duck and potato). Two vets said to try an elimination diet. We did, and could hardly add any thing back, as she NEVER seemed to get healthy enough after reacting to a new food to add another food. Well, I read this book in one sitting, and made an appointment immediately with the one vet in our state who is familiar with E&I dogs and Plechner. Our dog tested positive for the disorder--her cortisol levels were less than half than that of a healthy dog. She has only been on the medications for a few days, and she's stopped shaking her head and licking her paws. She's got her old playful attitude back--she hadn't wanted to play her favorite game for a couple of months. The best part is that she will very likely be able to eatwell-rounded diet when she's better stabilized. What looked like food allergies was most likely food intolerances caused by her imbalance. Most E&I dogs can eatnormal diet unless they have "true" food allergies.I'm in raptures because without this book, my dog would more than likely have struggled all her life with these problems, been treated symptomatically for what was a whole body glandular disorder, and continued to have a poor quality of life. This book is easy to read, compassionate and straightforward. Plechner pulls no punches- the test is expensive, and the medication regimen is usually for life. But he gives countless examples of diseases and symptoms that are often caused by E&I imbalance-- it's amazing and heartening to read that countless problems occur when the animal isn't making enough cortisol, and that these problems are fixable. He gives info technical enough to help any vet treat your animal--even if the vet has never diagnosed an E&I dog before. He sternly explains that E&I treatment won't fix true food allergies---but it will more than likely make symptoms caused by other kinds of allergies disappear. I am buying this book for friends who have chronically sick dogs, and lending my copy out to anyone who is curious. It's well worth the investment. My dog will be the first to agree!

The most handy reference on the subject
This is by far the most useful text of its kind. While it is not as comprehensive as Harrison's book on avian medicine, nor as thorough as Altman's, this book is a better deal in terms of accesing practicalinformation and cost. The book's organization puts both Altman's andHarrison's to shame. For the listed price, this little manual packs a lotof useful information.Read more

Disappointing Photographs
There are about 30 color plates of dogs in art, which are lovely. However, the black and white photographs which head the section on each breed are of very poor quality, many of them blurry or fuzzy. It's difficult to get a clear idea of what the breed really looks like. The information, as usual, is complete and well-organized. This refers to the new 20th Edition, which I just purchased.

I have enjoyed it but it's not for everyone
It's quite technical but is heavily illustrated and goes into detail about different breeds and various aspects of cat care.

Every cat owner should have this book in their library.

Manual is manual and as such it serves as a fast guide of consultation.

Good job
This is a wonderful text on complementary medical therapies for pets. A superb introduction to herbal medicine and understanding Traditional Chinese Medicine. I highly recommend it and as a fellow holistic veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) I found the information quite useful.

Lot of good information, difficult to get through it all
I found this book to be inclusive of a lot of current information, but it is not for light reading.It can be difficult to get through all of the information, or dig out what you may find useful.Her emphasis on some problem behaviors being the consequence of an imbalance in neurotransmitters is not shared by everyone, as a good majority of these animals can be considered normal when evaluated in an ethological sense. This is it!
This book should be on the shelf of everyone who works with dogs and cats, especially those who work directly with pet owners. The appendix is packed with detailed protocols to help owners manage and change problem behaviors, from dominance aggression to inappropriate urination and back again to chronic leg-humping. Owner compliance is one of the biggest challenges animal care professionals face, and these detailed step-by-step protocols steer sometimes overwhelmed civilians in the right direction. Wonderful!
This book is awesome! It has provided me with so much knowledge of drug uses, interactions, reactions... etc. Working in a vet's office this book has been a great help to me. It talks at the veterinary technicians level, as opposed to reading a lot of information that just goes right over your head. It is geared from the nurses point of view and is organized into easy to find categories, with all the similar drugs listed near it, along with possible interactions/reactions. A must have for the vet tech!

This book is a very good pharmacology reference!

The author, Juliette de Baïracli Levy, offers detailed directions for treating all farm animals with natural methods, while stating her evidence that "mechanized" farming methods have led to the demise of domesticated animals' overall health. If you own goats, own this book
I am a goat farmer for many years now.I have bought many books on goats, veterinary manuals, and so on, but this book is the first one I turn to for animal ailments.Natural rearing methods produce better and healthier kids than any other method.I bought one doe kid who was so ill with a disease that affected her brain that I was going to put her out of her misery--- it was too late for a vet to do any good.With the herbal treatments in this book, the goat recovered and lived over a year in good health.
